HardBit 4.0: The Silent Network Ransomware

Image
Introduction Ransomware attacks continue to be one of the most dangerous cyber threats facing organizations worldwide. Among the newer and more stealthy threats is HardBit 4.0 ransomware , an upgraded version of a malware family that has been active since 2022. HardBit 4.0 represents a significant evolution in ransomware design. Instead of relying on flashy data leaks or public shaming tactics, this ransomware focuses on quiet persistence, strong encryption, and advanced evasion techniques . Its ability to remain hidden while maintaining long-term access makes it especially dangerous for businesses and enterprises.   What Is HardBit 4.0? HardBit 4.0 is a file-encrypting ransomware operated by cybercriminals who primarily target poorly secured network services. Unlike many modern ransomware groups, HardBit actors do not operate a public leak site and do not focus on double extortion tactics. Their strategy is simple but effective: encrypt critical systems and dem...

Critical Windows Zero-Day Vulnerability Lets Attackers Steal Users NTLM Credentials

Image
Security researchers have publicly revealed a newly discovered critical vulnerability that affects all Windows Workstation and Server versions, from Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 to the latest Windows 11 (v24H2) and Server 2022. The flaw allows attackers to obtain a user’s NTLM credentials simply by tricking them into viewing a malicious file in Windows Explorer. This action could be triggered by opening a shared folder or USB disk containing such a file, or by accessing the Downloads folder where the malicious file might have been automatically downloaded from an attacker’s webpage. After responsibly reporting the issue to Microsoft, the researchers have released micropatches to protect users until they provide an official fix. These micropatches are available free of charge during this interim period. Details of the Vulnerability We are withholding the exact technical details of the vulnerability to minimize the risk of exploitation. However, the researchers emphasize that the v...

QEMU Emulator Exploited as Tunneling Tool to Breach Company Network

Image
Threat actors have been observed leveraging the QEMU open-source hardware emulator as tunneling software during a cyber attack targeting an unnamed " large company " to connect to their infrastructure. While a number of legitimate tunneling tools like Chisel, FRP, ligolo, ngrok, and Plink have been used by adversaries to their advantage , the development marks the first QEMU that has been used for this purpose. " We found that QEMU supported connections between virtual machines: the -netdev option creates network devices (backend) that can then connect to the virtual machines, " Kaspersky researchers Grigory Sablin, Alexander Rodchenko, and Kirill Magaskin said. " Each of the numerous network devices is defined by its type and supports extra options ." In other words, the idea is to create a virtual network interface and a socket-type network interface , thereby allowing the virtual machine to communicate with any remote server . The Russian cyber...
